Philippine food products, a big hit in Taiwan
Posted 29 July 2008

The recent Taipei International Food Show held in Taipei showed a positive indication on the growth of the Philippine’s food processing industry.

Gleaned from the Bureau of Export Trade Promotion (BETP) Report filed in June 2008, Outbound Business Matching (OBM) and Technology Mission (TM) to Taiwan held in tandem with the Taiwan International Food Show (TIFS) on June 18-21, 2008 in Taipei, Taiwan stated that the Mission Team was composed of thirteen (13) food manufacturers and exporters represented by thirty-one (31) individuals, with a representative from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). An estimated one hundred twenty-four (124) buyers attended the food show. The OBM generated a total sales of US$8M.

The Philippine pavilion at the Food Taipei showcased food products of San Agrinurfure, Inc.  Other food products featured on the list were the rice-based mixes and noodles (pancit bihon), desiccated coconut, and canned fruits in syrup, as well as marine products such as tiger prawns and squid.

A strong buyer-turnout and the level of acceptability accorded to Filipino foods during the show prompted MECO Managing Director and Resident Representative, Antonio I. Basilio to state that the Philippines can supply the affluent and quality-conscious Taiwanese market with premium food products from fresh and processed seafood to top-quality processed fruits.

In 2007, Philippine food companies earned $4.1M worth of orders during the annual event, a 59.5% increase from the previous year, registered at $2.6M.

As a commitment agreed upon during the 15th RP-Taiwan Joint Economic Conference held in November 2007 in Manila, the activity evolved into an annual event with an expanded coverage.
